Dog Bites and Rabies

Dog bites are painful, require medical attention, and breach the trust between an innocent individual and the dog that delivered the bite. However, not all bites are as easily treated as others. Rabid animals, particularly rabid dogs, pose a significant danger to all people whom they come into contact with. And because dogs cannot be held liable in a court of law for the actions they commit, their owners must accept the consequences of the injuries their dogs have inflicted on others.

Dog owners are encouraged to have their pets vaccinated against rabies, but not all pet owners take the time to ensure that their dogs are properly vaccinated. Such behavior can be deemed negligent, and any attack that takes place as a result of said negligence is often times the full responsibility of the negligent party.

If bitten by a rabid dog in New Jersey, a victim must be treated with Rabies Immune Globulin and the rabies vaccine within 48 hours of the incident occurring. Even if there is a hint of doubt as to whether or not the dog involved in the incident is rabid, treatment should still be performed. Aside from treatment of the victim, dogs that may in fact be rabid need to be quarantined for a period of at least 10 days, and owners of such animals need to ensure that these potentially dangerous animals are not allowed to be in proximity of any other potential victims.

Dog owners are charged with the responsibility of properly taking care of their pets. Such care includes making sure that their dogs do not contract rabies, and that, if they do, proper care is administered to the dogs before they are able to inflict harm upon another person. If harm does befall another person, then it is the responsibility of the pet owner to accept accountability for the act, particularly if the act resulted from some sort of action that could be deemed negligent on the part of the pet owner.
